Exceptional pies make this pizza place one of Midtown's best-kept secrets.

Editorial Rating: Highly Recommended

The Scene
With its yard-sale furniture, amateur artwork and stalled DIY renovation projects, this pizzeria wobbles between being bohemian and just plain beat-up. Here, you'll bus your own table and separate your trash. Heck, you can even return your pizza box for recycling.

The Food
Since nothing else claims the limelight here, the pizza might as well. Thankfully, it does. A step-and-a-half above the local competition, Cameli's serves thin, crispy, ultra-basic pizza. Opt for the plain cheese classic thin or a monster slice and add the homemade Italian sausage. Also worth your attention are the gourmet combinations (try the Tranquillo or the Pax Americana). Welcome to your new weekly habit.

I first tried Cameli's a few months back. The pizza is so fresh ingredients and tasty that I crave it! It's my only choice for pizza - when I indulge in pizza! The crust is perfect thin and crusty with just the right amount of tomato sauce and cheese. Then they add an abundance of my favorite toppings - vegetarian for a perfect pizza!

We always forget about Camelli's because it's just not convenient to our house (there's a Fellini's just around the corner), but EVERY time we go we promise ourselves to drive the extra ten minutes for the best pizza we've found in Atlanta. The monster slice borders on obnoxious. Remember the trays that your elementary school lunches came on? The monster slice would hang over the edges. I prefer to get the smallest pizza they make (it's about the same size as one monster slice). The tomato blush sauce is terrific! Really hard to go wrong with anything. Not a pretty place but worth it anyway!

I love Cameli's pizza. I personally think it's the best in the city especially if you like thin crust.

Love it-- Almost Yankee pizza! I think the best thing there is just the regular cheese pizza w/ basil-- so good you don't want to water it down with anything else. Only problem is that with thin crust, I can eat half a large. This blows away every popular pizza joint in town. This should replace every starbucks, and market Pizza in a Cup...

Miss it and you've missed it

The best food for the money we've found We get to Atlanta a couple of times a year and never go there without eating at Cameli's. The Calzones are my favorite and they give me dining pleasure beyond compare.

I was quite impressed with the flavor and texture of the pizza crust. It was very much like the flavor of the pizza crust in Tuscany I would highly recommend the white pizza. It has delicious cheeses and has a flavorful combination of ingredients. Very good comfort food.

Best pizza in Atlanta!

This pizza joint has the best thin crust pies and slices in the whole city. Homemade sauces and fresh toppings are all excellent and fresh. You can tell a real Italian owns this place. These people could sell their pizza in NYC and Chicago and more than stand up to the competition!

Pie, oh my!

Hole-in-the-wall Cameli's outshines the competition

I'm a firm believer that there's no such thing as bad pizza. At its worst, it's still pretty damn good. Crust plus sauce plus cheese equals satisfaction. But when it's really good -- as it is at Cameli's -- it's a blissful experience. Tucked away in a crumbling corner of the Ford Factory Lofts on Ponce de Leon, Cameli's makes no bones about its hole-in-the-wall status. The joint is the proud polar opposite of swanky pizzerias like Fritti and Baraonda. But make no mistake: In its own way, Cameli's is just as good.

The list of create-your-own pizza toppings is expansive, with high-end items like prosciutto, gorgonzola and Greek olives, but my advice is to leave the creativity to them and try one of the specialty combination pizzas. The Marguerita, Cameli's' take on the classic margherita pizza, almost comes across as health food. The pie is topped with plenty of garlicky marinara and fresh basil, and just a sprinkling of mozzarella. The Papa C, on the other hand, piles on pepperoni, Italian sausage, red onions, mushrooms and black olives. The crispy-chewy crust is substantial enough to handle all those toppings without going limp. Even after you've completely gorged yourself, you'll still have to polish off that last slice.

If you can tear yourself away from the pizza menu, the sandwiches are respectable, too. Two pieces of toasted focaccia can barely contain the messy but fabulous chicken pesto sandwich, which oozes chunks of grilled chicken, melted mozzarella, wilted spinach and tomatoes. There's also a vegetarian version that replaces the chicken with onions and marinated artichoke hearts. Good stuff.

Service, such as it was, was downright pleasant. The girl behind the counter actually smiled at us as she took down our order. Other local pizza joints seem to cultivate churlishness like it's prizewinning behavior. Don't get me wrong -- it's never actually deterred me from eating at those spots. But service with a smile is always a nice surprise.

When it comes to pizza, everybody has their personal favorite. And I guess there's enough business to go around, because a new pie joint seems to pop up every week or so. But for my money, Cameli's is the best slice in town.
